CTEF Upcoming Certification Program

The Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) provides education and installer certification for professionals working in the ceramic tile and stone industry. We are a non-profit organization supported by stakeholders from all industry segments, including contractors, manufacturers, and the major domestic and international trade associations. Our tile installer certification program, launched in 2009, is non-proprietary, standards-based, and is the only installer certification that ensures installer skill level and is backed by the industry. Our certification was created as a means for consumers to identify tile contractors committed to providing quality installations.

The Certified Tile Installer (CTI) program is a comprehensive testing of the skills and knowledge of experienced tile installers which includes a multiple-choice exam and a hands-on test. Both are based on current industry standards and best practices for producing a sound installation that exhibits good workmanship. The tests, therefore, require that both the observable and non-observable characteristics of a finished installation are executed properly. Please note: this is a test of ability and is not considered a training event.

Crossville Trip October 2011

Crossville hosts D&B and our
customers several times a year at their factory in Crossville, Tennessee. Crossville has been a great vendor partner of D&B Tile for many years. Everyone fly’s into Nashville airport and stayed in a very nice hotel in downtown Nashville. Crossville takes the entire group out to dinner and an enjoyable night of local entertainment. As well as a good time we are all taught about how tile is produced when the entire group visited their factory. All customers are invited: Designers, Architects, Developers, Builders, Tile contactors, and Tile setters. We always send different members of D&B staff to provide greater training and education. CEU credits are available to the professionals.

If you think about it, the timing could be perfect for an upsurge in your business. Sooner or later, we have to come out of the current economic situation. Interest rates are at an all-time low; the housing market has virtually nowhere to go but up; and, many people are interested in downsizing their residences and moving into something smaller. It is definitely a buyers' market. We may see many snowbirds who are unwilling or unable to maintain a residence "up north" and one down here; and some who have already sold their homes and are heading to South Florida for a permanent residence. Remember, it will always be miserable in Rochester in the winter and we will always have the sun, palm trees and the beaches.

Put all those factors together and we could possibly see significant light at the end of the tunnel. With that in mind, gear up for what could possibly be heading our way. If you haven’t been in our showrooms for a while, take the time to visit. We are constantly remodeling and renovating to present our customers with the best selection of flooring products in the industry. We are offering frameless shower doors in all stores and, in many locations we are showing complete kitchen mockups. If you aren't aware of our exclusive Q-Seal process for your stone products, ask any sales representative for a demonstration. This is a permanent treatment which will seal natural stone forever.

Baptist of West Kendall / MGE Architects - Commercial Project

When MGE Architects in Coral Gables designed the West Kendall Hospital, staff interior designer Ana Maria Valle was assigned to the project. Part of her responsibility was to determine the floor and wall materials for the hospitals. She turned to D&B Tile Distributors and Crossville. Working with design team member Carole Schafmeister FCSI, she formulated a design for the interior lobby and bathroom spaces in the new state-of-the-art hospital.

"We worked with D&B Tile Distributors because of their stature in the industry. Our relationship with them on a corporate level, and mine on a personal level, was one of trust and respect. I have worked specifically with architectural representative Carole Schafmeister for the past six years and havecomplete trust in her ability to deliver what we need. As for specifying Crossville ... it was a combination of warranty, ease of maintenance and selection. The tile we specified works beautifully and was used in the hospital lobby, cafeteria, elevator areas and in most of the bathrooms. Ecoland Dunes was used inall patient room toilets as well as the Medical Art Building."

Sandi Bavota

Sandi is a valued member of the showroom sales staff at the Sawgrass store. She has been with the company for nine years. Prior to that, she worked for 10 years with a tile company in Naples, FL. When we sat down with Sandi, one of the key questions we asked was what kind of trends she has been seeing with in-store sales over the past few years. Her answer summed up the market conditions and may provide a tip for how we market tile to homeowners.

According to Sandi, "We all know that South Florida is virtually built-out. There simply is no more room for new housing projects and, up until a few years ago, much of our sales were to homeowners interested in improving their homes and then hoping to resell them. They stayed with mostly conservative tiles and trim and did not necessarily favor anything that wasn't traditional. That's all changed now since the homeowners I see on a daily basis are buying for themselves. They are more interested in decorating their homes to suit their own tastes. That is resulting in an upsurge in larger tiles, bolder colors and warmer tones." She added, "Our homeowner customers are gearing for the long-term rather than a short-term redecorating job and then moving on."

"We are actually seeing more upsell with customers who come into the store looking for a new backsplash and leaving with plans to completely remodel their kitchen. We have such a variety of products and brands that we have to take the time to more or less pre-qualify customers as to their needs and their tastes before we show them around the store. I always try to sit down with customers and determine their budget, their tastes and style of their home furnishings before we start looking at tile. By doing this, I can direct them toward complementary tile pairings, colors and sizes. We see a lot of customers who are choosing the larger tiles, up to 24x24, with smaller grout lines and using that tile throughout their home rather than in specific rooms."

Sandi works closely with the design team who often give her a heads-up about specific designers, architects or customers they are working with and when they arrive, she knows what to show them. She also knows that the tile business is 24 hours a day and that leads come from everywhere. "I see people all the time outside of work and recognize me as a D&B employee. I recently worked with someone from a store in the Sawgrass Mills Mall. Swim N' Sport is one of a chain of at least a dozen stores around the country. I am working with them on tile selection and expect to ship product to all locations in the US."

Q-Seal Permanently Sealing Profits in 2011

Nation's First Q-Seal Distributors Optimistic After Revolutionary Permanent Stone Sealing Process Shows Quick Profits.

Best Tile and D&B Tile, two of the East coast’s largest distributors, announced today that each is reporting higher than projected profits in their first year of their Q-Seal permanent stone tile sealing businesses. Florida-based D&B Tile president Harold Yarborough said, “Pre-sealing stone with the Q-Seal process has developed a brand new business for us. It’s re-energized our people, and our stone sales have increased more than 30%... and we did all of this during the worst recession in my lifetime.”

We visited ILVA located near Buenos Aires in Argentina to tour their plant, see their equipment and review their quality control. One of the most impressive finds for this company is the new design application process at ILVA. Their extensive research and development has come up with a process that makes it possible to vary the combinations of images reaching the edges of the tiles and printing in random and face by face modes which provides perfect decorative results. D&B Tile Golf Tournament Another Success

The recently concluded golf tournament held at Inverrary Country Club November 19 to benefit the James Jr. Fund raised an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 for the charity. Some 120 golfers enjoyed a great day networking and playing a round of golf... all for a great cause. First place winners were: Bill Stegner, Rick Lowell, Tim Faulkner and Bill Benz.

This was the first year for our event to be held at the Inverrary Club which also featured a first-time full buffet breakfast for all participants as well as Bloody Mary's on the course. A special thanks to Marlene Koszo for a great job of organizing this annual event.

As most of you know, our company has been around for nearly 50 years. We started from very humble beginnings and have never forgotten our origins. During this time, we have grown cautiously and steadily by hiring the right people, training them to realize that customers are the most important people on earth and by only presenting the best flooring products we can find in the world. And, we make a special effort to make certain our tile contractors are made aware of changes and new techniques and products.

For the most part, that philosophy has worked to bring us to where we are now with 10 stores from South Florida to Orlando and a reputation for taking care of our customers and our employees. A few years ago, we made the commitment to make our showrooms your showrooms. We have remodeled all of our showrooms to make them more user friendly and encourage you to bring your customers there to see products from around the world.

Elsewhere in this newsletter, you will see images of a recent series of seminars conducted by the National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) at some of our locations. We are happy to make these available to our contractor customers and we appreciate the feedback we receive on these sessions. As part of our ongoing educational efforts, we are now concentrating on certifying our contractor customers so that we can confidently refer our retail customers to a “certified tile contractor.” Eventually, that designation will have to be earned by all contractors who seek referrals from D&B Tile.

I am happy to say that we fully embrace the technology in the marketplace and are concentrating our marketing efforts on the internet in addition to our normal networking efforts. It is a steep learning curve for us and we appreciate your feedback. We understand the time constraints we all have and the need for “instant information.” So let us know how we are doing because as we progress and learn and increase our presence in the marketplace, we want to do the same thing for our vendors. Starting this month, you will begin to see “e-mail blasts” from a select group of D&B Tile vendors.

These are presented to you in an effort to keep you aware of changes and improvements in all sectors of our industry. Let us know how we are doing and if you want more information.

Finally, for this issue, we are continuing our efforts to work with “green” companies whenever possible. You will see more references to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Employee Profile – Dave Swain, warehouse manager, Pompano Beach

Our employee profile for this issue is Dave Swain, warehouse manager at the Pompano Beach location. Dave has been with the company for six years and was hired initially as a driver. However, his first promotion came on his first day when he was moved to the front counter to work in customer service. He assisted in reorganizing the displays in the showroom and also became an assistant to the purchasing manager for the location.

Soon after, the company recognized Dave’s technical skills and he became instrumental when the company switched computer systems in 2008. Dave also worked in a hands-on capacity to set up the new store location in West Palm Beach. Continuing his advancement, the company recognized his managerial potential and named him showroom manager at the Pompano store, a position he has held for the past two years. Dave supervises three people and appreciates the opportunities afforded to him by D&B Tile.

As an employee, Dave typifies what we are looking for in an employee. He brought enthusiasm and determination to the job and along with a willingness to learn new things. Because of that, he has steadily advanced in his career with us and we look forward to a long relationship with Dave.

D&B is a family in more ways than one for Dave since his wife works in the Delray Beach store. He and his wife and five children live in Boca Raton. Carole Schafmeister, FCSI, is an Architectural Representative for D&B Tile Distributors, a 45-year-old company with 10 branches and showrooms throughout South Florida. D&B distributes marble, stone, glass, porcelain tile products, setting materials and equipment to the architectural, design and construction communities.

She previously owned her own tile installation business -- That Woman’s Tile Company. Carole has been working within the construction industry for more than 35 year -- from South Florida to the Bahamas to Atlantic City (NJ) -- assisting various construction firms in the building of hotels, casinos, power plants, golf courses, shopping centers, theaters, office buildings, public service plant facilities, laboratories and residential. D&B HOLDS ITS FIRST ANNUAL CLEARANCE AUCTION MAY 15

D&B Tile Distributors will hold its first annual Clearance Auction at the Hollywood store May 15 from 11 am until 6 pm.

The Hollywood store is located at:

This event will be held indoors and refreshments will be available.

This auction will be conducted by internationally-known auctioneers J. Sugarman Auction Corporation and is being held to make room for new inventories of tile and other floor coverings. Included in the auction will be up to one million sq/ft of tile from many manufacturers to be sold by pallets. As many as 400 pallets of tile will be on display at the store.

Customers will select from a wide range of tiles, including wall and pool tile, mosaics, pool mosaics, marble and bathroom fixtures as well as two piggyback forklifts and an assortment of office furnishings and equipment. Customers may preview items for auction on Friday, May 14. Attendees must post a $100 refundable deposit at the door. Payment must be made by cash, cashier check or credit card.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT- Jamie Blomquist

When the pageant judge asked aspiring model Jaime Blomquist what her goal in life was, she answered “I want to be an interior designer.” That likely ended her modeling career but launched a design business that has established itself with high-end clients in the residential and commercial sector here in South Florida as well as the eastern seaboard.

Jaime Blomquist is founder and president of Expressive Designs, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale. Her formal training included an Associate of Arts degree from Northwood University, an Associate of Arts degree in residential design and a Bachelor of Arts in commercial design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale.

Jaime works closely with D&B design team member Carole Schafmeister on many projects. “The largest portion of my tile books are from D&B Tile. I have been working with them for the past seven of my eight years in business.”

Her work can be seen in many of the area’s luxury homes as well as residences in Chub Kay in the Bahamas. Many of them feature D&B’s exclusive Crossville line of tiles. “Tile has gone from just bathroom décor to the common space and has become art in many homes. It is no longer just a surface. I especially enjoy working with the larger tiles and tiles that look like another product such as wood or marble.”

Jaime is encouraged by market conditions but doesn’t expect a recovery until at least 2011. “We’re seeing some encouraging signs in residential remodeling for this year but the commercial sector still has some readjusting before it comes back.”

RECOGNIZING OUR EMPLOYEES

Marshall Brooks, driver working out of the Delray Beach store, has been in South Florida for the past six years. He moved from Rochester, NY and stopped in when he sa w a sign in front of the store advertising for someone with a Class B license. As they say in the movies. “. . . the rest is history.”

Marshall has a reputation as being an all-around employee, stepping up wherever he is needed. “My primary responsibility is as a truck driver for the Delray and Palm Beach stores. Occasionally, I will fill in at Pompano and Hollywood, if they need help. However, Delray is my home base. When I’m not on the road here, I’m usually in the warehouse or in the showroom helping customers with tile samples.

“My philosophy is you do what you have to do to get the job done. A few weeks back, my piggyback was down so I had to unload the entire truck by hand. I pride myself on being a self-starter. If I’m caught up on my work, I look around to see what I can do to help. D&B is a great place to work. They treat everyone like family and I hope to stay here for a long time.”

He and his wife are involved with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERTS). She is a medical secretary. They both volunteer their efforts. “I’m captain of the CERTS organization for our community. If there’s a disaster like a hurricane or flooding, we are the first responders. Three days after I started my job here at D&B Hurricane Wilma hit our area. That was a memorable time.”

Marshall emulates what we look for in an employee. He does his work properly and thoroughly and looks to help someone else when he can. We all admire Marshall and his family for their community involvement and look forward to working with him for many years to come.

Random thoughts on the
tile industry by Dave Yarborough,

As I have said before, tough times don’t last . . . tough people do. We’re not out of the woods by a long stretch, but D&B Tile Distributors is in it for the long haul. If you succeed, we succeed. We’re in this together.

As a case in point, have you noticed any changes in our showrooms lately. We’re at it again in our continuing effort to think outside the box and to provide opportunities for our tile contractors to increase their profits and for our retail customers to stretch their remodeling budgets.

We have partnered with a number of well-respected companies in the remodeling industry to present our tile contractors and retail customers the option to see the latest in the industry and get in front of reputable, professional contractors who can install our tile as well as remodel their kitchens or bathrooms. Random thoughts on the tile

Well, there are some encouraging signs on the horizon. We are starting to see some bright spots in the housing industry, Wall Street is looking better and…. We’re all still here!

When these inevitable economic situations unfold, they eventually work themselves out. You can argue about government intervention, stimulus or just plain luck. Personally, I like to think it is the free market economy at work. During these times, the weak fall and the strong survive. You don’t survive unless you have put yourself in a position to do so by structuring your company properly

We’ve all seen construction companies pop up, make a flourish… then disappear leaving a trail of problems behind them. D&B tile Distributors was founded nearly 50 years ago and we have experienced steady, measured growth because we had a plan. Basically, that plan was to provide the best products we could find at the best prices with outstanding customer service. Regardless of whether you are a multi-million dollar customer or a homeowner interested in a bathroom remodel, you will see products tastefully presented only after we have done extensive research to determine their quality and durability.

In addition to showcasing luxury automobiles by Lexus, this elegant dealership serves as a showroom for classic D&B Tiles. the service drive features three different tiles from D&B - the lightest two strips are Kalestone porcelain tile, color Heraklia Stone Beige. The dark tile is Crossville Strong series, color Nero. Inserts (Squares) are Saicis Perfido series, color Scuro procelain mosaic. The bathroom/locker rooms are ILVA Crema Marfil porcelain tile on the floor and walls with Crossville Glass Blox glass tile, color Deep Sea.

Carole was elected as chairman of the United States Green Building South Florida Chapter Miami Dade and Keys Branch. This special recognition underscores the commitment of D&B to our environment and to the achievements of one our key architectural representatives.

Gene Moscone, President of Fantasy Flooring, Inc.

He began his career in the industry working with his father at the tender age of four. At the time in Massachusetts , bricklayers also laid tile and marble. When his family moved to South Floirda in 1977, his father’s business installed tile and marble exclusively.

“Immigrants built this country at the turn of the last century. This type of work has been the mainstay of my family for generations. After we moved to Florida, I worked for my father every weekend and in the summers. I learned from him that nothing beat quality installation and attention to detail.”

After his father became ill, Gene took over the family business and eventually opened Fantasy Flooring, Inc. himself. “We do tile, marble, wood laminate… you name it we’ll put it down. Our workforce fluctuates with the economy. At the moment, we have 12 employees. When I find good people, I keep them. One of my subcontractors has been with me for 25 years.” Working in mostly high-end projects, his company has installations at the exclusive Ocean Reef Club on Key Largo and The Ocean in West Palm Beach.

In addition, they are the exclusive flooring contractor for Robinette Homes in Hawk’s Landing in Plantation – a position he has held for 14 years. All of his business comes from word-of-mouth and he lists Stiles Construction, Paul’s Carpet and Marble crafters as some of his larger contractors. “At this time, we seem to be in a niche with a number of dealerships including Sunrise Harley Davidson, Lexus of Pembroke Pines, lexus of North Miami, Rick Case Hundai, Sawgrass Infiniti, Coral Hummer, West Kendall Toyota as well as the corporate offices at Auto Nation and the recently completed Eldorado Furniture in Coconut Creek. "The tile industry has changed dramatically in recent years. Back in the '70's the average floor tile was 8x8 and it was soft clasy ceramic tile. Now we're installing 24x24 rectified porcelain and some people can't even cut it properly. We've Seen a number of companies go under but that basically culled out those who were not performing properly or which were poorly managed."

Gene and his company have been customers of D&B Tile Distributors for nearly 30 years. "They are the only company I buy from mainly due to their customer service. Environmental protection is one of the most pressing concerns for our world today. We all have a responsibility to think "green" and it should not just be a slogan, but a reality. As a country we consume vast quantities of everything, all the time. Individuals and companies that show snsibility to environmental issues will benefit.

Building "green" means incorporating environmental considerations and resource effciency into every step of the construction of a commercial building or a home in order to reduce the impact on the environment. Buring the design, construction, and operation of a building or home, it is important to consider the development of the site, energy and water efficiency, building design and materials that are efficient, indoor environmental quality and maintenance.
What is LEED and why is it important to our industry?
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives building owners and operators the tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their buildings' performance. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. LEED programs include New Commercial Construction and Major Renovation Projects, Existing Building Operations, Commercial Interiors, Core & Shell Development, Homes, Neighborhood Development, LEED for Schools and LEED for Retail, Guidelines for Multiple Building and On-Campus Building Projects.

The rating system is continuously refined and has become the green building standard of choice for Federal agencies, state and local governments.

Materials used to produce building products and where those materials come from is a key determinate in "green" products that are manufactured from salvaged materials, products with post and pre-consumer recycled content, products made from agricultural waste materials, products with exceptional durability or low maintenance requirements, certified wood products, rapidly renewable products, avoidance of toxic or other emission and products that conserved energy, reduce pollution, etc.
Are ceramic, porcelain and glass tile products considered "green"?
YES! Many ceramic tile and installation material manufacturerers are investing significant resources to develop tile products. Ceramic and porcelain tile products are manufactured using naturally occurring raw materials such as clay, kaolin, feldspar and quartz minerals. Some glass products are manufactured from recycled bottles or windshields. The material may be manufactured in an energy efficient building that reduces water consumption, land-fill deposits from their scrap material, have advanced dust collection systems, waste-water reclamation system, kilns using natural gas, are manufactured with pre and post consumer industry recycled materials from 10% to 100%. Some manufacturers' products have been verified by independent third party certifier of environmental claims.
Why should I purchase ceramic, porcelain and glass tile products for my home, building or business?
-- Because tile products.....
Prevent mold, mildew, fungal and bacterial growth if maintained regularly with cleaning products.
Will not absorb nor emit VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) with chemicals from surrounding materials.
Are fire resistant, fade resistant, hygienic and non-conductive
Easily maintained with water-based materials
Do not require solvent based clearners or sealers offering important advantages for indoor air quality during installation as well as for the long term use in buildings and homes.
Have a long life cycle that requires few replacements in the field outlasting other non-tile products up to five times longer.
Can survive floods. Can be sport repaired, removed and replaced. Replacing the entire floor is not necessary, tile can be installed over existing tile, reducing waste and new substrate material (if sound construction and good substrate).
Is not an orginiator nor a secondary source of air pollution
Is inherently kind to the environment.
Tile setting and grouting materials do not emit volatile organic compounds.
Comercially:
Buildings account for 18% of worlds water use, 25% of its annual wood harvest and 40% of energy consumption. Buildings can be a very large part of sustainability initiatives. Reducing their consumption will result in lower operating and maintenance costs, and may provide government incentives in fee waivers and tax abatements. Many Federal & State buildings incorporate LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Desgin).

Construction of LEED Projects:
Design- Discipline Team:
When a building is establishing criteria for a LEED Certification, it is incumbent upon the design discipline teams to review all of the products that are being used within the building depending upon the type of LEED certification it is striving for. Based on various credits and points such as use as a sustainable site, be water & energy efficient, review of materials and resouraces, indoor environmental quality, innovation and design process. Each section has many components that need to be reviewed for compliance.
General Contractor- Subcontractor Team:
General Contractors Obligations - Contractors should be aware of all LEE project requirements and expectations before bidding and after award of a contract. they should communicate with subcontractors and provide active training of the subcontractors regarding all sustainable issues, LEED requirements, documentation requirements, construction waste management, and indoor air quality management while under construction.

Employee Profile- Stanley Abramson

Stanley Abramson

By his own admission, Stanley Abramson is "old school" in this business. Born in the Bronx, he went to work for his father's retail floorcovering store at 16. "In those days, we didn't have ceramic tile it was mostly linoleum. My job was to do estimates and sales in the store. I worked for my father until I enlisted in the US Army to fight in the Korean War. I stayed in the Army until 1956 and returned to work in the family business."

After leaving his father's business, he worked for New London Mills and eventually Armstrong Cork handling the Long Island/ Queens territory. Eventually Stanley and his wife decided to move to Florida. They lived in Miami while he worked for Gamy & Levy and Alabama Floors before coming to D&B Tile Distributors.

"After realizing I was one of the only few salespeople covering the entire stat of Florida, I approached D&B Tile and was hired. That was 13 years ago. It has been nothing but a joy and a pleasure to work for this company. If anyone could say they are working for their family... this is the place."

In the past few years, Stanley has scaled back his schedule and now covers Naples, Palm Beach County, Fort Lauderdale, Davie and as far north as Tequesta. "Most of my dealers are retail and I typically make 6-7 calls each day. I believe in customer service, as does D&B and it works for me. One of the highlights of my career here at D&B was being in the Million Dollar Club for four years. I was presented with a beautiful diamond ring which I will always cherish."

Like most, Stanley is optimistic about the economy and the business prospects. "Things will get turned around. D&B is a strong, stable company and we will continue to maintain our position in the industry with strong customer service and an excellent selection of products."

Certification Overview

Too often, consumers choose an installer or contracot based on price alone, which results in lost work for qualified installers and installation failures. Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF) launched the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) program in 2008 to provide a means for good, knowledgeable installers to verify their skills and promote themselves to potential clients and employers. Certification enables professional installers to provide industry- recognized proff of their abilities and secure more work.

The program was developed in response to the lack of a mechanism for consumers to know the level of proficiency of prospective installers. By encouraging consumers to use only the best-qualified installers, the program will help to raise the quality of installations in the U.S. Making strides toward this goal is important to maintaining the status of ceramic tile as the material of choice and continued industry growth.

The Certified Tile Installer (CTI is already underway and involves a multiple-choice exam and a hands on test. Both are based on current industry standards and best practices for producing a sound installation that exhibits good workmanship. The tests, therefore, require that both the observable and non-observable characteristics of a finished installation are executed properly.

Installers who pass the written and hands-on exams receive a certificate, an identification card, and, most importantly, marketing materials developed by CTEF. For example, certified installers may display the CTI logo on business cards, vehicles, and clothing. Additionally, CTEF provides promotional brochures that encourage consumers and gerneral contractors/ builders to use certified installers.

What is Certification?

Certification is the validation of the skills and knowledge of the men women who presently are installing tile successfully in the United States.

Who should register?

Any installer may take the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) exams if he or she has at least two years of verifiable experience as the lead installer setting ceramic tile on a full- time basis. Experience as a helper, improver, grouter, finisher, etc. does not qualify toward the two-year requirement. The CTI designation identifies the professional installer who has reached a level of proficiency to independently and consistently produce a sound tile installation that displays good workmanship.

For those who are not installing the tile on a full-time basis, the two-year requirement applies, through more total years of installation are required to make up for the percentage of time not setting tile. For example, an installer who installs ceramic tile about 1/3% of the time must have six years of this experience. Again, experience is defined as having full responsibilty for substrate prep, layout, coordinating with other trades, etc.
While we encourage all qualified and interested individuals to take advantage of the certification program, we offer a friendly caution to those who have been setting tile for the minimum amount of time.
In order to maintain the integrity of our certification, CTEF evaluators require strict attention to even the smallest of details. The installer must prove he or she can competently excute all phases of installation and consistently produce finished work that is functionally sound and exhibits a high level of workmanship that will satisfy the most discriminating clients. Our grading procedure allows very little latitude for technical errors or aesthetic flaws, as we pledge to uphold certification as a meaningful symbol that consumers can trust. Typically, three to five years of tile setting experience is required to attain the knowledge and skills required.
What is the technical
proficiency exam?
The technical proficiency exam is 155- question, open book, multiple choice test. Upon registration, applicants will receive the following study materials: TCA Handbook for the Installation of Ceramic Tile, American National Standard Specifications for the Installation of Ceramic Tile, and Fundamentals of Ceramic Tile Installation for Certified Tile Installers.
What is the hands-on test?
The hands-on test allows CTEF evaluators to verify that an applicant has the skills to deliever an installation that meets industry performance and workmanship standards. Installers must demonstrate their ability to excute a complex layout and proper installers must demonstrate their ability to execute a complex layout and proper installation of vapor retarder membrane, back board, tile (walls and floors), cementitious grout, and flexible sealant (caulk).
Marketing your CTI Certification
Installers who pass the written and practical exam received a packet of marketing tools that will provide consumers, architects, designers and contractors a recognizable standard of expertise. The package includes:
Certified Installer certificate - Plastic wallet card - Certified Installer logo - Consumer brochures - Listing on the CTEF website. Two testing sessions will be held at MAPEI facility in Deerfield Beach May 27-28 and 29-30. Certification is the validation of the skills and knowledge of the men and women who presently are installing tile successfully in the USA.

Employee Profile- Ray Ammeraal, Jr.

When you spend a minute with Ray Ammeraal, Jr. from the Orlando store, you realize you are dealing with a person with a wide range of experience and a dedicated employee. He is quick to point out that his job with D&B, "Is the best job I ever had." That speaks volumes since he worked in county government for 13 years, auto body work for 10 years, spent 11 years at Winn-Dixie, five years as a weatherman for the U.S. Army with tours in Kansas and Alaska and on top of that was a volunteer fireman for 23 years.

Recognized as the recipient of the Iron Man Award at D&B's December holiday party, Ray claims he treats D&B like it is his own business. "A typical day for me here starts at 7 am and ends around 6:30 pm when my wife picks me up. I do a little bit of everything from customer service, warehouse, inventory and transfers. Whatever needs to be done, they call me. In fact, I save the company $500 a month by simply turning off the lights in the warehouse."

Ray is married. His 23-year-old son Brad and 25-year-old daughter Alissa live at home. A self-described "country boy" he lives 24 minutes from work and formerly lived in Astatula in North Lake County near Sugarload Mountain. He enjoys fishing and gardening.

Ray we appreciate your devotion to the company and your enthusiasm. Don't plan on going anywhere for a long time.

Random Thoughts on the
tile industry by Dave Yarborough,

There has been much written and said about the current economic situation. And this is not the time or place to rehash who's fault it is or which so-called "stimulus plan" will work. So let's just cut to the chase.

Effective immediately all tools will be discounted 10% for the entire year in all nine stores! This offer cannot be combinded with any other discount and is not retroactive. Now is the time to upgrade the tools of your trade. Speak with any of out inside sales staff to learn more.

As a company, we have survived tough economic times before and will again in the future. Our organization has survived and grown because we plan for the long-term and don't take unnecessary risks. We have grown to nine stores in Florida covering the area from Orlando down through South Miami and the Florida Keys.

Our philosophy from day one has been to protect our customers and offer them the best products and the lowest rates possible. For contractor customers, we offer continuing education and training in all areas of our business. In fact, if you look at front page of our website, you will see the schedule for the latest round of seminars conducted by the National Tile Contractors Association and hosted by us. These training sessions will be held at four of our locations and are free. However, due to limited space, you must register in advance to hold your spot.

Finally, we spend a great deal of time training your employees especially our sales staff and warehouse crews. Take the time to speak with them during your next visit to our stores. D&B Tile Distributors was proud to provide tile used in the renovation of the family home of John D. Pennekamp, Jr..... a name familiar to everyone in South Florida.

John D. Pennekamp, Jr. a retired Air Force pilot and long-time resident of the family home in Palmetto Bay. For a little background on the family, John D. Pennekamp, Sr. moved to Miami in 1925 where he spent 50 years at the Miami Herald as news editor, managing editor and daily columnist. One of his passions was conservation, and he devoted much of his newspaper work and free time to environmental causes in Florida. Among his greatest achievements was his leadership in saving the Everglades from over development and establishing the Everglades National park in 1947. In 1960, Pennekamp was instrumental in getting the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorial to create a 75- mile offshore sea park on Key Largo that was named the John D. Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
General contractor on the job was Coral Gables Plumbing. Shown below is owner Rick Swanson and his son Brandon. Swanson's parents bought the company in the mid-1950's from the orginal owners. Rick has been working there since 1970. His son Brandon joined him in 1992. Coral Gables performs work mostly in Palmetto Bay, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Kendall. This apprenticeship school was begun in 1969 and is currently funded by Palm Beach Community College. The three-year program for tilesetters averages about 20 men and women. According to Training Director Robert A. Duffy, "They come here for 6-8 weeks and then go out for on-the-job training. We enjoy a high placement rate for our graduates with most going to Catalfumo and DiVosta Homes."

The school welcomes donated materials and encourages any employer looking to hone the skills of new tilesetters to give them a call at 561-689-2205. School is located at 2000 N.Florida Mango Road # 106, West Palm Beach, FL 33409.
